Field of View Calculator

The Field of View (FOV) Calculator is used to help identify several field of view metrics associated with DRS Infrared’s major products including:
  • WatchMaster® IP Elite 3000
  • WatchMaster® IP Elite 6000
  • WatchMaster® IP Ultra 3000
  • WatchMaster® IP Ultra 6000
  • Tamarisk®320
  • Tamarisk®640
  • UC 640 17-micron
  • Zafiro®640
Use this tool to determine the number of "pixels on target" given a particular product, lens selection, and range. The FOV Calculator presents the number of pixels on screen for a given subject, whether a dog, person, truck, or airplane, as well as maximum ranges for subject detection, recognition, and identification.

Download Field of View Calculator
Click here to download the DRS Infrared Field of View Calculator. Microsoft Excel is required to be installed for the Calculator to operate properly.

A zip file will be downloaded that contains the calculator spreadsheet and associated imagery. Extract the embedded files into a single directory. Open the "Field_of_View_Calculator_rev*.xlsm" file to begin using the FOV Calculator.

Instructions on Using the FOV Calculator
IMPORTANT: Enable macros within Microsoft Excel for the FOV Calculator to operate.
  1. From the "Available Camera Models" drop-down in cell B-5 on the FOV Calculator tab, select the product on which the calculations will be based. The "Camera Information" section to the right will populate with information, such as pixel pitch (size) and resolution, for that camera.
  2. From the "Available Lenses (HFOV)" drop-down in cell B-16, select the lens to use with the product chosen in step 1. Lenses are represented by the number of degrees in their horizontal field of view. Only lenses that work with the product selected will be displayed. Note that lenses with smaller horizontal fields of view generally see farther but more narrowly.
  3. In the "Range of Object (m)" field in cell B-31, enter the expected number of meters between the camera and the subject. This may be as close as 3 meters if watching a doorway, 25 meters if watching a courtyard, or 100 meters or more if watching a fence line, large parking lot, or airport.
  4. Finally, either input the estimated size of a subject (in meters) in cells B-39 and C-39, or select a standard subject, such as dog, human, truck, or airplane, from the drop-down in cell B-44. Selecting a standard subject will automatically populate the sizes for that object in the formula.
  5. Once the object size has been entered, the "Range to Object" section to the right of the final inputs will display the "pixels on target" information and the maximum ranges for object detection, recognition, and identification for this particular set of inputs.

Export Guidelines

DRS Technologies, Inc., a.k.a. DRS Infrared, manufactures thermal imaging products based on sensitive technologies that are controlled for export, reexport and retransfer by the United States (U.S.) Government. As a result, many of the products offered for sale on this website are controlled by the U.S. Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), which implements and enforces the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), which implements and enforces the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

To conform to U.S. federal regulations regarding the sale and shipment of thermal imaging technology, customers are required to submit appropriate documentation at the time the product is ordered and, if needed, obtain export authorization. For products identified below as being ITAR controlled, exports, reexports and retransfers will almost always require prior transaction-specific written authorization from DDTC. For products identified below as being EAR controlled, exports, reexports and retransfers may require prior transaction-specific written authorization from BIS, depending on the destination country, the end-user, and/or the end-use. Customers should provide destination country/end-use/end-user information at the time of purchase in order for DRS to make proper export licensing determinations.

The information included in the chart below provides some guidance on the type of documentation needed for our product categories. This information is meant to be a guideline only. Please contact us at DRS Infrared to discuss your specific situation.

Other STA Designated Countries1 = Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, excluding Embargo/Sanctions (see below).
Embargo/Sanctions2 = Countries of Burma, Cuba, Iraq (with some exceptions), Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria, end-users prohibited by General Prohibitions set forth in EAR Part 736, incorporating by reference EAR Part 744, and nuclear, missile, chemical and biological, or maritime nuclear propulsion end-uses.
ECCN 6A9933 = EAR-controlled 9Hz Cameras which are uncooled thermal imaging cameras having a maximum frame rate equal to or less than 9Hz, are controlled under ECCN 6A993, and may be exported outside of the United States without an export license, except to the Embargo/Sanctions (see above).
ECCN 6A003b.4.b4 = Uncooled thermal imaging cameras with frame rates of 30Hz and 60Hz are controlled under ECCN 6A003b.4.b and, unless not to be embedded, usually require a license from BIS, unless to Canada or otherwise eligble for license exception STA (see below).
STA5 = License exception Strategic Trade Authorization. In some cases under ECCN 6A003b.4.b, the license exception STA may be available to support an export in place of an export license, although additional reporting requirements (identified in 15 CFR §743.3) apply, and provided that the camera(s) to be exported are for civil and not military use (see below), and for export, reexport , or retransfer to or within Argentina, Canada or Other STA Designated Countries (see above). STA also requires the transferor to communicate the ECCN and use of STA to the transferee, and requires the transferee to execute a Consignee Statement in accordance with EAR Part 740.20.
Civil Only6 = Incorporation into military commodities prohibited. EAR Part 744.9 requires prior transaction-specific authorization from BIS for export, reexport, or retransfer of products under ECCN 6A003.b.4.b for incorporation into military commodities.
